I have been teaching at a public high school in Central New York for four years. This district is rich with diversity. About 60% of the students here are classified as minorities, and approximately 10% of the students speak a language other than English at home. Unfortunately, the poverty level here is high. Approximately 51% of students in the district receive free or reduced lunches.
While money is provided for some classroom supplies, there isn't money available for new books this year. I'm currently working with other 12th grade teachers to revamp the curriculum, and we would love to add new literature to the program.
Because of the diversity and poverty, I'd like to include literature that my students can relate to. A Raisin in the Sun, a play about a black family living in poverty, is a perfect choice. I've taught it in the past, but I only have enough copies for one class.
Your help will enable my students to read literature that relates to their lives and help them realize that they can achieve their dreams.
