I teach high school art, photography and journalism in a small town city high school. Our school is forty years old, low income, and high minority population. However, we achieve great things here. We've earned millions in academic college scholarships with our achievements and determination for success.
Even though school system budgets have eliminated many electives from our curriculum, our art program has grown in strength and opportunity for our students to explore the arts. Painting is like a magnet. Kids from the age of two want to try it in all its forms. This project is designed to get high school students back in the uninhibited mode of a two year old with no fear of trying something new.
Having a canvas to paint on is different than any kind of paper project. I find every student takes more care with the assignment.
Students think they've "arrived" as an artist when they have something worthy of framing. These panels are an affordable method for me to provide that achievement.
Last year at graduation we featured "Art of the Senior class" in the main lobby display area for the awards ceremonies. The pieces chosen by many seniors were paintings. The parents, students and community LOVED IT! You can be a part of that achievement.
