My project is all about the well-being of the student body at my school. Students’ well-being can be categorized in few ways; we will be focusing on social/emotional and physical wellness. My students will learn about strategies to control their emotions through mentor texts and practice strategies to alleviate stress, like dancing. They will learn how to care for their bodies (how to brush their teeth properly, to wear sunscreen, healthy alternatives to junk food, etc.). My students will take what they learn and teach it to their peers, truly impacting our community.
My students will specifically be working with the refugee and homeless population in our community to promote social/emotion and physical wellness.
Groups of students will teach a 20-minute lesson on social/emotional and physical wellness. One on stress alleviation (using the speaker to create a dance routine, coloring, and breathing strategies), one on healthy foods (trying out new snacks and creating new healthy recipes), and one about their bodies (teaching kids how to brush their teeth and the importance of sunscreen). Each student will receive coloring pages, markers, a tooth brush, and healthy snacks to take home. Lastly, my students will pair with their peers to grow and care for a sunflower. The sunflower will act as a metaphor for their bodies and will give the students a sense of purpose and feeling of accomplishment.
The goal of this project is to promote well-being through learning and teaching! My students will first learn and then give back to their community by teaching; impacting the refugee and homeless community at our school!
