This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Time is the scarcest resource in a classroom. Schools like KIPP are successful in part because of the additional time they build into the school year. While I cannot increase the hours my students are in school, I can make sure that we are using every moment to close the achievement gap.
Our school is located in an urban area of Northern California with high levels of poverty.
Students in my class have been victims of and witnesses to violence that no child should ever experience. They all qualify for free lunch and breakfast.
The average reading level among my fifth graders is a 3rd grade level. Out of 50 students, 40 of them are reading below grade level. 10 of them read at a kindergarten or first grade level! Our goal this year is to grow two grade levels in one year. My students are well aware of their gaps and they are eager to work hard to become better readers. Students constantly ask to stay in during recess to continue reading their library books.
My Project
Each day, my students switch classrooms 5 times. With the time it takes them to gather their materials and walk to another classroom, we lose up to 10 minutes of learning time with each transition. That's nearly an hour a day that we are spending moving stuff instead of becoming better readers.
With a library cart, students can load up their binders and pencil boxes on their way out to recess or lunch. Afterward, they can go directly to their next classroom where their materials will be waiting for them.
My students cannot afford to waste time moving between classes.
They need to be spending every minute of the school day learning or they will continue to fall behind when they get to middle school and high school. Please help close the achievement gap for these students by providing resources that will increase learning time in our classroom.
