Maximizing Student Success with Flexible Seating!

My students need flexible and fun seating options to optimize choice in the classroom!

My Students

Students at GCS come from a variety of ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are located near a University, but are a very rural district. Since Illinois lacks a state budget, both the university and local schools are suffering.

My students are as diverse and unique as this project!

They are coming to school with more physical, emotional, and learning needs than ever before: the need to be less distracted, to move, to stand, or to change the scenery! My students are important!

My Project

The excitement in my students would be palpable if this project succeeded in funding, as would mine! Students are coming in with more needs than ever. The ability to move while learning would allow them choice in what we are doing, make things fun, and give students something to look forward to each day. Without funding of this project, flexible seating won't be an option in my classroom, as we are not being given a classroom budget for the upcoming school year since we are in our third year without a state budget. It is finally impacting the students directly.

With flexible seating, the classroom environment becomes shared, not just mine.

Students choose where they'd like to learn, after committing to a set of behavior expectations. Not all students can sit in a desk for extended periods, nor do all students learn best while sitting. Being comfortable while learning allows students to stay invested in what we are doing in the classroom while allowing them to be themselves. The flexibility created yields a more appealing teaching and learning environment.

Students have the opportunity to exhibit their best learning self through flexible seating! It's all about choice! Students may stay seated at their desks. However, they may also choose a cafe table with an adjustable stool, wobbly stool, lap desk, or other option. Students may also use a table in the classroom with any one of these seat choices.

With budget cuts and the elimination of PE and recess programs across the nation, students need to move more than ever. Research doesn't support sitting in a desk all day; it's traditional learning, yet we keep doing it. It certainly has its place, but for today's learners, choice is the way to go. Thank you for considering my project!
