My Students

My fourth grade students are diligent, focused, and manage themselves well, but others have some difficulty focusing, paying attention, and staying on task. A few students in my class have quieter personalities, some are more outspoken, and some are trying to be comedians. Their ability levels also greatly differ, with some performing above level, a few performing at grade level, and several performing below level. I each day this in stride and plan my lessons and student work at the ability level for all my students. Each student is challenged every day, encouraged, and pushed to increase their knowledge, personal organization, and skills to help them become better students.

My Project

My project objectives are assigning projects that encourage students to design based on research, observations and application of classroom learning. To broaden and deepen the applications to 3D design and printing, these exercises will connect innovative technology. Many students learn best through kinesthetic manipulation, and 3D printing supplies a medium whereby these students can obtain much deeper understanding and form lasting retention of concepts. 3D interaction with a tactile learning environment will dramatically improve the performance and mastery of the standards related to science, social studies, and math standards related to geometry and measurement-based concepts.

Methods: 3D printer works by “printing” objects–but instead of using ink, it uses more substantive materials–plastics, metal, and rubber.

It scans an object–or takes an existing scan of an object–and slices it into layers it can then convert into a physical object. Teachers can build models to help explain concepts that are difficult to visualize. Students can also build models to explain their knowledge by making 3-D models. Students have an opportunity to design, invent or explore using computer technology and being able to see their design. As we move into the NGSS Common Core standards, it is important that students are given opportunities to apply, evaluate, plan designs and carry them out. Success will require students to not only design, but to research, analyze and strategic their resources.

I find that this activity prepares students to take on design challenges where they can solve real-world problems, both small and large like this one. I am looking for a great way to bring some joy to classroom, engage students in learning, teach the value of planning and brainstorming, research, troubleshooting, collaborating, digital literacy, presentation skills and so much more.
