Mauro-Sheridan Sensory Room

Help me give my students a Sensory Room where they can go to regulate during times of disregulation. Student's K-2 who.struggle with sensory intergration, body space awareness and anger and impulse control will benefit from a sensory room.

My Project

A sensory room creates a controlled sensory-focused environment. These environments allow sensory experiences to be individually tailored to meet the sensory needs of our students. They are essential when a student is facing over-stimulation and stress. It also can provide sensory integration therapy to individuals with sensory processing challenges.

I have witnessed many of our younger students run and crash into walls or bean bag chairs to fulfill their sensory needs, I want to create a space where they are safely able to do that.

They are telling us what they need, in an unsafe way.

The hope is for this project to create an entire room dedicated to sensory experiences in a safe and manageable way. By filling the space with specialized lighting, crash pads, soft seating, movement seating, balance items, weighted items, we hope to modulate an environment that reduces the opportunity for over stimulation, create a safe space for students to manage anger, over-stimulation and stress and provide a safe crisis and de-escalation area.

Research on sensory rooms has shown they are useful for reducing and managing stress and aggression, they are also useful in supporting reflective learning during debriefing. They can also reduce stereotypical, repetitive behaviors seen in students with autism.

When planning the sensory room for our school, we kept in mind the needs of our most at risk students in grades K through 2. These are students with high instances of elopement, aggression and defiance. Our goal is to create a flexible space that allows for different moods depending on the emotional, cognitive and physical needs of the students at the time.
