This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Solids! Liquids! Gasses!! These are HUGE concepts for students to understand, especially 1st graders! But my students LOVE science, and LOVE being able to explore the world through activities, experiments, and technology. This grant intends to stock my Matter Unit with tools for science success!
My classroom is located in the Southwest area of Denver.
We are in a diverse and loving community, but more than 93% of our students are on free and reduced lunch, and many of them are struggling to learn English in school as a second language.
Our school is very young, this is only our third year being open, and as a result we are still working hard to build full classroom library and supply sets for our deserving students.
My Project
The materials I am requesting would support our Science Unit on Matter. I am requesting: books for teaching, independent reading and research, and reference; center kits that students can set up and use instantly to study and learn about matter; hula hoops and alphabet balls to create huge models of atoms in each state of matter (we would use the balls for all kinds of literacy activities as well!); and high-interest computer games that students can use to reinforce all the hands-on learning done in class.
Science is such an important subject for students to be passionate about: it is a combination of all the other core subjects and requires creativity, diligence, and smarts to truly master.
I want to create a classroom full of scientists, and your donation to this project will help that vision become a reality by helping to create a fascinating and inspiring hands-on unit that will really drive home the academics of the states of matter!
