From Matisse to Picasso, artists reflect the world around us. I teach first grade students in an urban school setting with students from different socio-economic groups and ethnicities. All of them are artists, but they just don't know it...yet!

Rarely do our schools provide art materials for our students. I have a fine arts degree in addition to my elementary education degree. I know how important the arts are and I am determined to provide my students with the opportunity to learn about different artists and explore their own artistic abilities.

My students need paints, brushes, and paper in order to create their own masterpieces. We will study several prominent artists, their styles of painting, and their contributions to the world. Then we will paint in the style of each of these artists. At the culmination of the study, my students will create a painting in their own personal style. This project will expose my students to different art materials, styles, artists, and cultural contributions these artists have made. Art enriches our lives and I want to enrich each of my student's lives too.

Your help with this project will make art accessible to children who would not normally be exposed to an in-depth study of famous artists. This project will bring joy and a sense of personal achievement to students...even those that often do not excel in other areas. You can make a difference for these children and help them explore and experience the wonder of art. You may even see one of them exhibiting in a gallery in your city in the future!
