My Students
My students are from a low income area where most students are considered "at risk." A majority of my students began the school year with little to no supplies. My school and I are blessed to be able to provide the students with supplies such as backpacks, pencils, pens, scissors, crayons, markers, paper, pencil boxes, etc. That way their parents and themselves can worry about more important things other than supplying school supplies.
Between being a new teacher and moving into a very outdated classroom, I have spent a lot of my own money supplying my classroom with materials, seating, books, snacks, etc.
That has left very little room to buy things such as class sets of books, flexible seating, headphones, water bottles, or materials for lessons and projects. By helping donate to my classroom, you are helping students experience school how it should be taught; with hands on materials, physical books to read instead of staring at screens, engaging materials, and comfort and flexibility in our room.
My Project
These books will help engage my students and help restore their love for reading. After the COVID-19 shut down, I have noticed my student's confidence in themselves and their reading abilities have drastically decreased from my previous years. Since our return, I have been working hard to restore their confidence in themselves by giving them challenging but capable reading materials. It is also important to me to select engaging materials for my students so we can share the love for reading together. The students enjoy selected materials by me and prefer them over the district's chosen curriculum stories.
With these new books, my students will be able to read an engaging text while diving deep into the story with a book study, where we will practice and master many standards we have learned throughout the school year.
Throughout the story, we will answer questions about the text while using text evidence to support our thinking. We will draw inferences to understand the character's thoughts even when it's not stated directly in the text. We will investigate different figurative languages and their meanings. We will use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words and phrases. And we will summarize what we've read while finding the theme of the story.
As you can see, this text will not only help us continue to practice our standards, but it will also keep our students engaged with a story about a girl who is often misunderstood by everyone around her as she uses her powers to show that good will always triumph evil.
