Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This grant will benefit two classrooms of students with Autism ranging from 6 to 14 years old. I teach academics, daily living skills, and social skills to students that all come from high need communities.

Telling time and counting money are two essential life skills for everyone... especially for students with autism because they help aid in independence. Currently, I have one timer and one toy clock to teach about time and money. My students are eager to learn but I do not have enough materials to sustain their attention or expand their knowledge. This grant will provide curriculum for two classes of students with Autism. All of these students have individualized yearly goals that need to be met including math goals related to time and money. We set aside 15-30 minutes each day where students receive one on one instruction to achieve these goals.

People with Autism need structured and consistent routines in their lives. Learning about time will help my students make sense of their environment and become more independent in their daily schedules. Learning about money is equally valuable and will extend beyond the classroom to allow students to be independent in their community. With a variety of books, games, puzzles, flashcards, and home made curriculum, learning about time and money can be enjoyable and attainable for my students.

Your generosity will empower my students to live independently and help alleviate the stress and anxiety they deal with on a daily basis. Without these materials my students will continue to lack the necessary resources to learn these essential academic and life skills.
