This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine understanding regrouping numbers ("carrying over") without being able to manipulate models? Think about how difficult it might be to learn what a digit actually represents as you add or subtract it without being able to trade it, break it apart, and group it.

My inner-city students are a broad mix of special education, English language learners, and general education.

The wide range of learning needs demands that I present information in ways that are not only auditory and modeled, but also visual and manipulative. Having a wide range of materials allows for increased opportunity to meaningfully interact with topics in class.

My Project

I have requested base 10 blocks, fact family boards, addition/subtraction flash cards, pattern blocks, rods,counters, 10 frames, dice, to build an understanding of place value. By using base 10 blocks, students will not just be able to "carry" numbers over when adding or "borrow" from another number when subtracting, but they will truly understand that those steps mean one must regroup with a larger or smaller place in order to successfully solve an equation. There is no better time that second grade to build that foundational knowledge so that as my students develop and move on to higher grade levels, they can truly understand what it means to manipulate very large numbers- and do it quickly!

Donating materials to a classroom that is given no budget and supports the learning of students who are often marginalized means you are helping to provide the learning opportunities they might not otherwise have, and that all children certainly deserve.
