Mathematicians Seeking Rekenreks to Strengthen Number Sense

My students need rekenreks to help them develop number sense. Rekenreks (calculating frame, or arithmetic rack in Dutch) will encourage students to structure shortcuts in their thinking as they add and subtract.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 21 second-graders at a Title 1 School in southern California. We are a small school consisting of approximately 300 students led by a passionate, supportive, and fun-loving principal. My students are eager and enthusiastic learners who are excited to learn. They may come from various circumstances and backgrounds, but in my classroom, they are equal partners and participants.

I strive to provide my students with a variety of opportunities to bring their learning to life and enhance the curriculum.

I'm always looking for ways to add more fun, rigor, and excitement to their learning, and to enrich my teaching skills and strategies.

My Project

The rekenreks will encourage my students to use new strategies as they add and subtract, such as double plus or minus, working with the structure of five, compensation, and making tens instead of counting. They will also support and stretch my students' ability to use their initial strategy, then structure shortcuts as they begin to see patterns. The plastic cups will help organizing counting collections.

These skills are so important in strengthening their use of number sense, and place value.

I am excited to use these tools as they will encourage my students to become skillful in mental math strategies.
