My students need measurement tools for 7th grade project-based math and life science.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Davis's classroom raised $454

My Students
Einstein said, "Joy in looking and comprehending is nature's most beautiful gift." Donate to our project so that Innovations Academy 7th grade students can joyfully comprehend nature. These supplies will be used for various projects throughout this year and the years to come.
Innovations Academy students are from all over San Diego County.
They share a common bond because they have stepped away from traditional public schools and stepped into the imaginative world of project-based learning.
My students are a diverse group of learners. Many struggle with learning disabilities and have a history of negative experiences in math and science classes. My goal is to welcome them to the world of math and science with fun projects and activities such as kite-building, balloon twisting, cooking and origami.
My classroom is filled with various religious, cultural and socioeconomic groups. Some students cannot afford class supplies of their own.
These students are eager to learn and have are becoming self-motivated. Our projects are student-led. We start every day with a morning meeting and end everyday with a "class council" that consists of peer acknowledgments and problem-solving discussions.
My Project
The resources I am requesting are basic supplies needed for any math and science classroom. We do not use textbooks and only engage in activities that produce authentic, real-world learning. For example, we plan on building kites from scratch to fly in the Ocean Beach Kite Festival in March 2012. This project is not possible without protractors, t-squares and yardsticks. The balance will be used primarily to explore food science, health and nutrition. For example, we have discussed preserving our own pickles and jams. We can use thermometers on a daily basis to explore the world around us - How do organisms live in sub-freezing climates? What are micro-climates and why are they important to organisms?
My students will use most of these materials to create mathematical works of art, like kites and paper-sculptures.
These works of art will be presented to the San Diego community through events such as the Ocean Beach Kite Festival. Younger students at our school will benefit from direct instruction by my students in kite building, paper cutting and origami.
This is important to me as a teacher because I am full of ideas and low on supplies. My students are eager to learn and create.
