Mathematicians Need Hands on Learning

My Project

I love teaching math to all the fourth graders at my Title 1 school! They rotate into my classroom in three groups, and I have 85 total students now. Most of my students are Hispanic, Marshallese, Filipino, and African American. We struggle with chronic absenteeism, therefore a majority of my students are below grade level in math. They get excited about learning, though, and want to make progress. This is my first full year of teaching and I am so happy I get to teach my favorite subject.

I learned while getting my degree that manipulatives are critical in helping students learn math concepts.

They help students visualize abstract ideas, allow hands on learning, and keep them engaged. At the beginning of the year, I bought quite a few items to help teach place value, addition, and subtraction. Instead of a project, I chose items that help us with lessons coming up, including fractions, long division, and elapsed time. The long division white boards will help the students to visualize a difficult concept and keep their numbers in the correct place value spot. Most students are not fluent with their multiplication facts, so I added five labeled whiteboards that they can practice on. They love to get on the whiteboards and I can rotate who is practicing on them each day.

Except for the Expo markers, everything I have put on my list is reusable and will help more students in the years to come. I love all my kids, and am appreciative of the chance to submit this request.
