My class is full of brilliant 6 year-olds ready to take on the world. They come in with little knowledge, and will come out reading in 2 languages. My first graders are in a Dual Language Spanish/English program.
Approximately 50% of my students come from native Spanish speaking homes, while the other 50% are from native English speaking homes.
Every day, 90% of the instruction is in Spanish. As we strive to learn the target language, we also introduce English into our day. We follow all the standards for the Common Core State Standards, but they learn primarily in Spanish in first grade. About half of my class receives free or reduced-price lunch and could use the extra help in all areas.
My Project
We are requesting new math games and materials to help us run our math centers. Our school is 44 years old and has had many changes over the years. We only have some activities to support our math standards. With these math centers, the students can touch, count, order, add, and subtract, as they learn about ones, tens, hundreds, measurement and time. We will use math equivalency puzzles to find equal equations for addition, subtraction, fractions, time and money. The students will enjoy exploring different weight combinations in the measurement center. New gear clocks will be helpful in teaching small groups about time and how the hour hand needs to be between the 2 hours when the minute hand is at the half hour. The students will be able to work on number bonds adding and subtracting in fact families with the Visualize Math Write & Wipe Boards. We have asked for a new 100 grid pocket chart because the one we currently have is falling apart and has sharp edges. The Giant Number Sense Stamp Set and stamp pads will allow them to work on representing their story problems with 100s grids, number lines and 10s grids. The puzzle for adding 3 numbers fits well with the standards for first grade as well. The flashcards will encourage the students to work on math fluency and the pattern block cards will allow the students to explore the geometric shapes and make their own creations. All these activities will be centered around the Common Core State Standards.
What better way for a child to learn, than to experience it for him/herself.
You can be a part of helping this class and the students in the years to come. Thank you for partnering with us to encourage these first graders to explore
