Mathematicians in Need of Support!

My students need 2 iPads with cases, headphones, Rekenreks, math manipulatives and 2 digital cameras with SD cards to enhance our math activities.

My Students

I strive in my classroom for students to understand and explain math concepts and not follow a set of procedures to solve math problems. We use hands on learning to improve our understanding of all concepts.

My classroom has a very diverse student population.

Students come from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. I have many English Language Learners in my classroom. All of my students are very enthusiastic learners and are excited to show what they know.

My Project

I am requesting the ipads for several uses. We will use the ipads to demonstrate our understanding of math and reading through the use of the many amazing apps that are available. We would also use them during small group instruction. iPads are great for differentiating for students. If a students needs practice in a certain skill they could use the ipad apps to quietly practice the skill themselves or with a partner. These would also be a great resource to challenge my advanced students. I would love a class set of Rekenreks to support my students' growing understanding of number sense and learning the most efficient strategies to add and subtract. Rekenreks provide a strong visual for the mathematical ideas of compensation and equivalence. The blocks and Magna tiles will be used by students to explore geometry concepts and problem solving. The cameras and headphones will help us to document our learning and show the growth we make throughout the year.

In order to truly engage our young mathematicians in math, we need many hands on learning experiences and opportunities to share our thinking.

These resources will give students the opportunity to do that. These resources will enrich the students learning and the way I teach. My first graders will love learning with these resources and feel so successful that it will help spark a love of learning that will hopefully continue through their whole life.
