My Students
My second-grade students are creative, curious boys and girls who love to play and imagine. At such a young age, they are still so excited to learn about the world around them. For many of my students, school is where they come to feel loved and supported. We are a rural school with a high population of low-income students. Many of the students have families that are struggling both financially and personally. My classroom is a full-inclusion classroom and several children have special needs. It is my goal that our classroom will be a place where each child is seen and heard and know that they are a valued part of a community.
My Project
Second grade is a year of tremendous learning and growth in all areas, but especially in math. The concepts that they need to master are fundamental in building a strong foundation of basic mathematical understanding and fluency.
In my many years of teaching, I have found that reinforcing concepts already taught and explored in class, through the use of strategic games that specifically target skills and standards that they need to master, can be highly effective.
The students are having fun and practicing with these games, but they are also learning invaluable and important life skills, such as taking turns, making decisions, following rules and engaging with others in a positive way.
The board games that I am hoping to offer to my students will give them a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts while gaining a sense of mastery in basic addition and subtraction, place value, fractions, telling time and working with money. These are all important mathematical foundations and aligned with common core standards, as well as being basic life skills that they will use throughout their lives.
