I teach at a Title I public school in South Alabama with about half of the student population receiving free or reduced lunch. I currently have 21 students in my First Grade Classroom. These students have a very special place in my heart as I am looping up with my entire Kindergarten class!
My students are eager to learn but come with limited home resources.
First grade is a pivotal year for teaching Math fundamentals including number sense, fact family fluency, problem solving skills. I want to give them every opportunity to master these skills and to soar!
My Project
My students will benefit from the Calendar Math Activity pocket chart when we do our carpet time whole group morning meeting. It will be hung at a height that will easily permit students to assist with manipulating and updating calendar dates and days of the week information, and how many days we have been in school using ones, tens, and hundreds place value sticks. The turn in your work organizer is color coordinated by our classroom tables so students can turn in their work upon completion and I can view and make corrections as needed. It will also discreetly give me an idea of who needs additional intervention on particular math skills. The games and activities of Pop and Add and Wooden Pattern Blocks will update our math resources to provide independent learning stations with fresh games such as number sense, pattern blocks, shapes, and problem solving skills. The visual dry erase boards will allow the students to demonstrate their number fluency with fact families by being able to decompose numbers. It is important to keep learning fresh and informative for my sweet and inquisitive First Graders that I am looping up with!
