My Students

I teach a dynamic, ethnically diverse group of transitional kindergarteners. Our school is blessed to have kids come to us from all over the world!

This past year, my students surpassed my expectations with a math program that was new to me!

It builds on the premise that children have a lot of “math sense” before they enter school. I provided them with math “story problems” that they were to solve using math manipulatives. The amazing part is that these problems involved addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division . . . and my kiddos solved them!

My Project

My students cheer when I tell them it’s Math Time! They love the new engaging activities we use. The kids that get their materials first get to the rug first, leaving the others to sit on the cold tiles. Their desks don’t provide enough surface area for them to do these activities there, so that’s not an option.

A new area rug would be used for more than just math activities.

The kids will be able to sit or lay there to share books . . . always a favorite activity for kindergarteners! It would also be used for play time, where my kiddos learn about teamwork.
