My Students
"The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple." -- S. Gudder. I am hoping that the math manipulatives will my students make complicated things simple.
My students are in an urban school in Oklahoma.
My students are struggling with basic math skills. They have very little available to them in the area of hands on manipulatives. They need an opportunity to learn the math skills. You will help my students that are underprivileged and are lacking the support that they need. With these math manipulatives, my students will be able to learn the basic math skills that are the foundation to all other math skills.
My Project
Math should be hands on - working from concrete experiences, to pictorial, to the abstract as students gain a greater understanding. Concepts are addressed in a large group setting through calendar activities, direct lessons, everyday routines, graphing, sorting, counting rhymes, etc. in relation to the theme or literature being studied, independent and small group work at centers and tubs, and one on one skills practice.
The resources that are need include a hands on calendar math set, a variety of math games that involve associating numbers with quantities, one-to-one correspondence, patterning, shape recognition & matching Solving problems with concrete objects, sorting by attribute, counting to 10, matching & extending patterns, measuring in inches and other math skills.
Math is an important part of our everyday life.
Students need to learn and understand math and the best way for this to happen is by providing them with real life, hands on experiences. I am hoping that with these manipulatives, my students will gain an understanding of the basic concepts of math. These basic concepts will be the building blocks that all other math knowledge will be stacked on. The students will learn complicated ideas in simple ways.
