Many of my ESOL students do well in math when they are solving basic equations. They have a difficult time taking this knowledge and using it to solve word problems. Often it is understanding what steps to take in solving the problem and knowing the necessary vocabulary that is challenging for them.
I work with ESOL students from around the world in grades K-6.
A majority of my students live below the poverty line. Their parents are hard working, but often are not able to assist them with their school work. Many of them have good conversational English skills, but struggle with the academic vocabulary used in school.
My Project
I am asking for hands-on materials to help my students learn strategies for solving word problems. The Real-World Math Problem Solving Kits, Hands-On Problem Solving Centers, and Read & Solve Word Problem Center will provide my students with hands-on activities to help them learn new strategies for solving word problems. I will use the Build-A-Story Problem Flip Books to have my students create their own word problems as another way to practices new strategies. Finally the Word Problem Games Library and Self-Checking Math Match-Ups will allow students to practice their strategies in a fun way.
These math games and activities will allow my students to learn about math word problems in a hands-on way.
The games will provide them with opportunities to practice their new skills in a fun way. This knowledge will help my students be successful in math throughout their school career, and will teach them problem solving skills that will stay with them into adulthood.
