This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning math should be less about drilling facts and more about touching and seeing the reasons why math works. Teaching with hands-on activities works and my students love it!

I teach an amazing group of 30 curious bilingual 5th grade students in Texas.

They are now in their final year at an elementary school where more than 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch. This is the first year my bilingual students receive instruction entirely in English. It is challenging enough for my students to make the annual progress required to pass their high stakes exams in the spring and move onto middle school, without also having to achieve a level of English that is sufficient to pass the high stakes test for the first time in English!

My Project

When I work with my students in small groups for math, I use hands-on manipulatives and demonstrations. These are all of the supplies I need to really develop my vision of teaching in small groups with engaging, hands-on materials. The math games are fun, exciting and are ready to use. They can be assigned to students who are struggling with specific skills. When I divide the class, some students can use these materials while other students work with me at the magnetic board. The magnetic manipulatives make board work more fun because the students can show me with the manipulatives and tell me with numbers. This process naturally leads to logical reasoning which my bilingual students might struggle to reach if it weren’t for a hands-on approach.

My students will love working with these supplies and will benefit greatly from a hands-on, small group approach.

The supplies that students can touch and see make math real and meaningful for them and support higher-level thinking within math. Help my students reach their potential in math!
