This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Physics students are the best! They have such positive attitudes and personalities.
Our school's vision statement of "As we build on traditions of the past, we expect and accept nothing but the best" says it all.
We have a beautiful mountain range and a history that is unique to the state and it sets the backdrop for us each day. Our students have many life-altering challenges to go through but continue to push through. Our student population is one of the most impacted populations in our state. With a very high level of students on the free-or-reduced-price lunch program, there can be many challenges to learning that many other students don't even have to consider.
But we have an outstanding faculty, administration, and support staff that work tirelessly to help our students succeed and do their best. We embrace our vision and embrace growth in Academics, Citizenship, and Extra-Curricular Activities.
My Project
Two years ago DonorsChoose.org provided me with 12 calculators for my students to use in our Physics classes. These have been great! We calculate everything from the gravity of Mars, to the speed of a cheetah using these calculators every single day. These have helped tremendously for those students who couldn't afford their own calculators. Now it is time for me to take it up a notch. Cell phones have become a help and a hindrance to education. Using phones I can have students conduct research, find the acceleration of gravity, or post to a discussion. In the past, those who had phones could use them as calculators. But students (like adults!) have a hard time getting away from them once they are in their hands. As they are calculating, various text messages, Snap chats, and Instragram messages will pop up claiming their attention and pulling them away from the work at hand. There are days when I don't want students to be on their phones at all, but I do want them on calculators.
I want to velcro a calculator to every desk so that the students will always have one at their fingertips.
This will enable me to keep the learning moving along, without having to take additional time to pull students away from their phones. I already have 12, now I need some funding to finish out every seat in my classroom.
