My Students
Imagine, just for a moment, what it is like to be an elementary school teacher. You MUST be an expert in ALL academic areas. You have to stay current AND energetic AND engaging AND knowledgeable. Are you tired yet?
I have been a teacher for 17 years, although it really does not seem like that is possible!
In many ways I still feel like a brand new teacher -- some of these ways are positive, in that I always feel excited to meet my new students every year, and I'm always on the lookout for fun and exciting new ways of teaching and reaching my kids; but other ways are not so positive, such as feeling overwhelmed by the burdens of changing standards, frustrated by the lack of training teachers receive, and exhaustion from the constant need to research and write my own curriculum. On days when the negatives seem heavy enough to bury me, I always do the same thing: I tell myself to think of the kids. I have an AWESOME job, because I get to spend my days with the most interesting, amazing people. I can't let them down!
My Project
In order to be the best teacher I can be, I need to learn MORE. With this project, I hope to learn more about one of the most complex subjects to teach: MATH. I am requesting professional development books that will help me become a better math teacher. Specifically, I want to learn how to incorporate the following into my classroom: math work stations, meaningful discussions, and problem solving. These books will give me a plethora of new knowledge and ideas that I can use immediately in my classroom. I am also requesting a set of DVDs from a well-known math guru -- Marilyn Burns. These DVDs will allow me to attend one-on-one sessions with Ms. Burns and learn from her expertise. Through professional development opportunities provided by my district, I have started to learn how to use ChromeBooks with Google Drive/Docs to enhance my students' math experiences. I would like to continue this learning by taking an online course through Google for Education called Google Drive: Basics.
Using the ChromeBook I am requesting, I will be able to learn how to create, store, and organize math assignments in a way that uses technology to make instruction more efficient.
For example, once I share an assignment using Google Docs, my students can access it on their iPads AND will be able to give instant feedback to each other electronically. This project will definitely help me become a better math teacher for the people who matter the most -- my students. Thank you for your help!
