My Students

Word Problems cause most kids to go into hiding. I want my students to come out and tackle them with confidence.

My students are 8 year Olds.

They are curious, quirky and very tactile. They attend an elementary school in a poor community. Many of my students just need many hands on opportunities to be able to successfully tackle word problems. First week of school, when I mentioned word problems all I heard were groans and saw a little bit of fear in their eyes. They have slowly begun to tackle word problems with a better attitude and want them to enjoy playing with critical thinking.

My Project

The resources I am asking are manipulatives that their little hands can handle and manipulate. Mostly base ten blocks, that are clear so they can be seen on an overhead or document reader. And they interlock! So they can actually see units clicking into rods, into flats and into cubes before their eyes! This will help them represent the numbers that appear in word problems. I've ordered many, so the kids can actually work with them on their desks.

These clicking base ten blocks will do wonders, they will be able to manipulate greater numbers and use them to regroup, compare, multiply....and begin to gain confidence as mathematicians.

And instead of groaning when word problems appear, they will begin to come out and play with math.
