This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Math Versatiles can play a valuable role in supporting the mathematical learning and language development of ELL students by providing hands-on, visual, interactive, and culturally relevant experiences in the classroom. I serve a population of 98% English Language Learners where it is 100% free and reduced lunch. English Language Learners (ELL) are the fastest-growing student population group—according to an NEA Policy Brief, by 2025 nearly 25 percent of students in public schools will be English Language Learners.

There are many instructional challenges English language learners and their ESL teachers face.

The most obvious is that they do not speak English fluently. As teachers we realize that English Learners may have been top of their class in their home country, but all of a sudden they find themselves completely lost and defeated in American classrooms simply because they do not speak the language of instruction. This is extremely difficult for our students.

With such a dramatic increase, it is imperative that the educational community understands and adequately addresses the struggles of ELL students, and ensure that ELL teachers receive the best training possible. Many of my ELL students benefit from visual aids and representations to understand mathematical concepts. But, Math Versatiles incorporate visual elements such as shapes, colors, and diagrams, which can help ELL students better grasp mathematical ideas by providing additional context and cues. Math Versatiles can serve as a tool for language development alongside mathematical learning. By engaging with mathematical concepts in a hands-on and interactive way, ELL students have the opportunity to practice and strengthen their English language skills in a context that is meaningful and relevant to their academic studies. This can help ELL students feel more connected to the material and see the relevance of mathematics in their own lives and experiences.
