This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are young mathematicians and scientists in training. My goal is to prepare my students to become proficient in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

My first graders are motivated and diligent students.

Our school is a Math and Science Magnet school with a diverse population that reflects Los Angeles County. My students come with a keen interest in math and science. Our school's goal is to prepare every child to be college and career ready, especially in the areas of STEM.

My Project

My students and I will use the magnetic math manipulatives to learn and explore math concepts. The magnetic math manipulatives will allow me to model how to solve math problems for the whole class. The rekenreks will be a powerful tool to teach my students number sense. The notebooks will be used as math journals throughout the year. The pencil sharpener will ensure that we have sharpened pencils for daily use.

My students will benefit from the math manipulatives because they will be able to visualize concepts as well as make abstract math concepts concrete.

Young students are highly visual and physical, so being able to see and use manipulatives in a meaningful way will strengthen their mathematical understanding. The notebooks will allow the students to record their thinking and help develop their problem solving skills as they prove their reasoning.
