This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title 1 school in a low income area of the Bronx with over 95% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school services grades pre-k to fifth grade. I have the pleasure to teach first grade. Our school is ethnically diverse and majority of our population are English Language learners. We also have a large population of students who have disabilities such as speech, physical impairments, learning disabilities and autism.

My students walk into my classroom everyday with so much energy and excitement to learn despite facing various obstacles economically.

My students are full of wonder and love trying new things. Each one of my students is diverse and different in their own special way. They each learn differently and require different modifications and support. Some learn best with hands on activities, others work best in a group and the rest need a quite space of their own for thinking and reflection.

My Project

Math tool kits will be a great resource for my students to use when they are solving problems with number sense, computation and place value. Having access these manipulatives will help support my students a great deal in math. These tool kits can also reinforce using key concepts in first grade such as addition, subtraction, place value and geometry.

These tool kits allow the student the hands on learning that they need to reinforce key concepts in math.

They can use these tool kits independently or with a partner and small group. My goal is for students to have easy access to their toolkit, so that they can use they seamlessly to solve daily math problems.
