Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Fifth grade is what I describe as the perfect year; the students are still "kids" yet they are starting to find themselves as young adults. You can dance around to goofy songs and they join in. Silly jokes still get laughs. The students seem to have a never ending thirst for knowledge about space science, and school is the place where they come to escape the realities of their outside world.
The amazing, fifth grade explorers who journey into our classroom tackle their learning adventures with an open heart and a continually developing growth mindset.
They learn that by working together and through using their 21st century communication and critical thinking skills, they can tackle any problem that is handed to them.
Our students come with a range of learning styles and levels. Almost half of our students are English Language Learners, so hands-on or language rich activities support those who are developing language and those who have reclassified. Our students also come from backgrounds in which they often do not have school materials to support their learning at home.
My Project
Fifth grade math is a time of multiplication, division, decimals, geometry, and fractions. Sometimes, these abstract concepts can best be brought together through collaboration and group work. During our Math Blended Learning stations and small group time, students work collaboratively on real-world problems, games or application that bring abstract concepts into a real-world context, or they practice fact fluency.
Math blended learning time allows students to work on differentiated work that meets them at their individual math level.
It encourages students to build confidence in their math skills, and it nurtures a growth mindset in math as students learn from each other.
The materials from this project will go into building more math stations so that I can meet students at their small group math levels. Cardstock, paper, and whiteboard markers will construct gameboards or practice boards while spinners and dice will be used to support fact fluency, skill development, and collaboration activities. Linking cubes will support students in geometry and place value while cubes, sorters, and tiles will be used for place value, gameboard tokens, or the creation of arrays.
