This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second graders are from low income families and most are English language learners. The one language that is universal to us all is mathematics. Therefore, I try to make this subject fun and inviting for my students with hands-on activities.
In order to accomplish this task I would like to have a few math manipulatives that would make the beginning of the year less stressful. One of these manipulatives is the place value board kits. These kits would ensure that each student gets a board to learn their place value. Each place value card flips from 0-9 making this an excellent tool for teaching place value.
Another useful math manipulative is the liquid measurement kit. Although it's only one kit, students can work in groups and actually measure liquid by themselves.
The third manipulative I would love to have is the magnetic money for my board. I currently have paper money and I have to use tape to put it on the board. Having the magnetic money would make my lessons a lot easier and more visually interesting for my students.
And the last manipulative I would like to have is the digital timers. The one I had doesn't work anymore. We use digital timers from the beginning of the year to test the student's knowledge of their basic math facts. Students are timed to see how well and how fast they know how to subtract and add.
I truly believe that these manipulatives would make my second graders grasp mathematics concepts faster and better. Please help my classroom start a new school year full of fun math activities.
