This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 60 hard working and amazing 2nd grade students in a small East Texas town. I have been teaching for many years. I love what I do. My students love to work with hands-on activities, make creative art projects and play games. They do not respond as positively to worksheets or seat work activities as they do to physically manipulating the words, letters, or manipulatives. My students love to work in centers or sing songs to learn new concepts. I strive to make my classroom a fun, safe, and exciting learning environment.

My Project

This school year we are learning the ins and outs of money, finances, needs and wants, and financial literacy. We will also incorporate problem solving skills, addition, subtraction, money concepts, and operations to find the cost and change of purchased items. We will use pretend money to learn how to identify and count coins. My students will have the opportunity to earn money and then purchase items from our class store. They will earn the pretend money and coins for their hard work using the hands-on learning station kits I have requested. Then will have an opportunity to purchase items such as bracelets, flashcards, snacks, games, art supplies, and other items for them to enjoy. With your help my first graders will have financial skills to use throughout their lives.

They have a sense of ownership, leadership and skill development centered around money and economics that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Students begin to understand how business works, and become a part of their communities. This project will strengthen their understanding of finance, how to be responsible with money and what the role of money has in their family’s lives and their own lives. Through this project, students will become financial leaders themselves.
