Look how much fun math can be! Using math manipulatives, allows children to use their critical thinking and 21st century skills to solve math problems with a variety of strategies and working collaboratively. Gone are the days of memorizing math facts and doing paper and pencil worksheets.
My class of 29 energetic kindergartners attend a high-performing school in Southern California.
Children in my class range from non-preschoolers to second-year kindergartners. So, the range of abilities is large and using math manipulatives will foster learning at all levels. Like many other schools, we are suffering from drastic budget cuts.
My Project
My students need counters and place value manipulatives to foster hands-on math problem solving and a storage unit and bins to help with organization. With these math manipulatives, my students will be able to understand math concepts such as numbers sense, patterning, addition, subtraction, and word problems using various strategies and explaining their thinking. This will help facilitate the push towards 21st century learning and using critical thinking along with cognitively guided instruction. The cubby unit and bins will provide easy access and storage for the classroom environment.
This project will impact ALL of my students by encouraging critical thinking and various strategies to solve math problems with manipulatives and a hands-on approach.
Children will be able to better explain their mathematical thinking.
