Hello, I am a Special Education Teacher on Staten Island. This is my sixth year teaching Special Ed. I have been teaching a 12:1 class of fourth and fifth grade learning disabled students. My current class consists of 12 fifth graders with cognitive abilities that range from the beginning 1st grade to mid 3rd grade. They are speech impaired, dyslexic, autistic, and two have suffered seizures resulting in very low cognitive functioning. They can't process and retain information the way General Education students do. They are kinesthetic learners. They learn by doing things hands on.
Unfortunately, we are the only class that doesn't have any games or math manipulatives. Our education system doesn't always provide all theses children need. It has only provided text books on their grade level. Wouldn't it be nice for them to learn math the fun way, hands on, their way?
We need games to learn and practice the basic math skills these lovely children can use for the rest of their lives. Maybe if we give them a chance to have fun while learning, and I will be sure we're having fun, they can learn and feel better about themselves.
Here's where you can help. You can make a difference in their lives. Only you can make it possible for these children, and others I'll teach in the future, to learn their way and have fun at school. You can help raise their self esteem. These kids need your help to learn math in way that doesn't threaten them with failure. They need to feel successful, learn on their level, and have fun while doing so.
