Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are so many math concept to be learned from the calendar. Students' affective filter is lowered when they are learning new skill through fun and engaging activities. Think about your school years and how your learned.

My students live in a very impoverished section of Los Angeles.

They live in a mostly industrial neighborhood where gang violence is seen as the norm. Students spend long hours at school and eat most of their meals at school. They all qualify for a federally funded meal program. Many students have had tremendous hardships at such an early life. They want to improve themselves and help their families too. Even at the age of 7 they know that only with an education can they break the poverty cycle.

My Project

I am requesting a Calendar Math Activity Program to help us learn mathematical concepts such as even and odd numbers, place value, and patterns in a hands on way. Along with the Calendar Math Activity Program, I am requesting Calendar Math Journals. With the new Common Core State Standards students need not only understand and be able to do math problems and computations but they need to explain their logic and rational as to how they came up the the given solution. Therefore, I am requesting journals to add the opportunity for students to present their learning and how they solve given problems in writing. In addition, I am also requesting Place value blocks to ensure that students understand place value that will later on lead into addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Please help my students internalize mathematical concepts with daily calendar activities.

Many times paper and pencil is not the way to help students understand mathematical concept. I want every child to feel successful during math class. I want them to be excited about every new concept being presented. I want them to yearn for more math. Please help my students by donating these essential manipulative so that they can learn math the right way.
