This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The essence of Mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple" S. Gudder.
My students love to learn new things, but when it comes to Math, it isn't always that easy.
Most of my second grade little mathematicians come from low income homes.
We are a public school with a very high percent of students receiving reduce or free lunch. My students are very motivated to learn Math but unfortunately, we have very limited Math materials in our classroom. I try to provide my students with a variety of Math activities but with so few resources available, most of them have to work on their workbook, and wait patiently until it is their turn to join a center.
My Project
I want to implement a structure in my classroom where all students work on learning centers everyday. With these new Math centers, I can enrich my lessons and meet the many needs of my students working with them one-on-one or in small groups while the rest of the students are practicing and applying their new acquired skills. Learning centers provide many benefits to children; students can build their skills working independently or cooperatively with other students. These centers will provide my students the opportunity to work at their own pace and at the same time will challenge more advanced students. While working on these centers, my students, beside taking an active role in their learning, will be practicing their social skills working, cooperating and learning to respect each other.
Children learn best when they are actively engaged.
This project will provide my students the tools they need to succeed and to take an active role in their learning, developing math and social skills they will use throughout their entire life.
