Math that Moves

My students need to move all day! Active bodies make for active minds. When bodies and minds are engaged, learning multiplies! My students need magnetic ten frames, jumbo dice and clocks!

My Students

The students in our inclusive classroom have a wide variety of strengths and talents and come from diverse backgrounds. Some are learning multiple languages, others struggle with language or reading disorders. We have children with speech needs, behavior needs, OT needs, autism needs and gift and talented needs. And, we have children that have any combination or all of the above.

Together we form a beautiful rainbow.

Each of us learning and growing alongside one another, becoming more compassionate, accepting and appreciative of our differences. We are all, in our own way and color, reaching for stars and hearts.

My Project

My first graders want to move and shake all day. And, they should! Active bodies make for active minds, and when both body and mind are at work, learning multiplies. My students have helped me think of many ways to keep our bodies moving and our minds engaged all day- like adding movement to our morning meeting, shared reading, and even science and social studies vocabulary and big ideas.

The one part of the day that we have struggled with is math.

We have brainstormed ways to add physical movement to our math warm up- adding actions to mathematical signs and numbers, but when it comes to the independent and partner practice components of guided math, things were getting a little stagnant. Technology, practice pages, and math journals just don't allow for much physical activity. That's when my first graders started coming up with games that would allow them to keep math as the focus, but increase our activity level.

Adding math games to our center rotations will keep our bodies and minds moving. I asked my students what we would need for these game. They discovered we were lacking math manipulatives like dice, dominos, stamps, to change up our games. They said pocket charts, magnetic pieces, and oversized manipulatives would keep them on their feet. We also discussed logistics- how would we organize our games to make them easy to use and store. The kids decided we would need tubs of various sizes and labels so that they could get up and get what they need on their own. I was so impressed with all their ideas, and I'm crossing my fingers that Target can make it happen! Teachers love Target, and it's so wonderful to see that they love us and our kids right back.
