Math Teacher Barbie

Help me give my students the tools to apply math to a basketball shot and to use algebra to calculate how far Barbie can bungee jump!

My Project

With increased emphasis on the need for STEM instruction to better prepare today's learners for tomorrow's world, often times the math component is overlooked.

These materials will provide authentic mathematical learning with the intent of inspiring a group of eager learners to embrace math rather than run from it.

Barbie will help students with algebraic equations by bungee jumping from unknown heights and changing the number of rubber bands to get as close to the ground as possible without hitting her head. Graphing the slope, calculating mean, determining mean absolute deviation, and good-natured competitive engineering will inspire students to apply their knowledge to a fun-filled activity.

The tumbling tower is a rainy day game where students can practice their one-variable equations, and the basketball hoop will provide hands-on experience with using geometry to make a basketball shot from various angles and then calculating percentages of shots made from each angle.

I have seen the impact authentic learning provides and would love to add these activites to our classroom collection.
