This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school mathematics classroom is a place where students are encouraged to learn through discovery. Students are engaged in hands on learning opportunities where they manipulate the concepts being taught to them so they can take ownership of their learning experience.
Students in my classroom face a lot challenges.
Many of them are English Language Learners that are attempting to learn challenging math concepts all while still trying to master a new language. Others do not have access to technology at home and the only chance they have to use tablets or computers is while they are at school. A lot of them are also on free and reduced lunch.
It is my belief that students should be engaged in a learning experience that is both challenging and fun so they can be equipped with the skills they need for tomorrow all while having fun today!
My Project
My students need hands on use of technology to help them close the achievement gap in mathematics. We need six Asus ZenPad tablets with cases to help them close the achievement gap. These tablets will not only keep my middle schoolers engaged, but they will help prepare them for computer based standardized testing.
Although not all of my students have mastered the English language, many of them are experts at manipulating technology.
These tablets will allow my students to learn new mathematical concepts on a platform that is familiar to them. They will be able to participate in learning games, collaborate with their peers on class projects, and provide immediate feedback to me with student polls.
