Do you remember math class in high school? I do. It was not my favorite class to go to: sitting at a desk, taking notes, the teacher ramble on and on. I swore, I was taking a foreign language. I don't want my students to feel like that. I want them to enjoy their math class, at least a little.
I teach a variety of high school math students math.
The majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch, almost 90%. They are students that have struggled in math all their lives. The most common statements I hear are, "I was no good at math" and "I hated math" from the parents. These students have spent most of their lives hating math. I am trying to change their attitude about math. I am giving them study techniques and trying to get them active in their learning. The only problem is we need supplies.
So far, I have gone through over 3,000 index cards and only a few weeks have gone by. I am running out of the few supplies I have. I also need a way for my students to keep their index cards together so they do not loose them. I am trying to help my students stay organized and learn study skills to help them. My students need an opportunity to see that math is not all that bad.
My Project
I am asking for index cards, rings to keep the index cards together, markers to make their notes on the cards colorful and files to organize their notes, classwork, homework and tests into. Just a few supplies can make all the difference with my students. They need an opportunity to be successful, but they need to be taught how. They need to learn that a little organization can help them in the long run. They need to learn how to study and how to take notes. Please help me teach my students these skills.
My students need a chance to see that math is not the enemy.
They need a chance to learn math without negativity. They need a chance to enjoy their math class. My students need your help to prepare them not only for next year, but their future as well. Not only will these tools help them with my class, I hope that they will help them to study and learn in other classes, as well and prepare them for college.
