Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are extremely hard working. They often come to 6th grade with huge gaps in their understanding of mathematics, but with some training on growth mindset, they show amazing growth. There are many reasons for the gaps in their learning. Some students have moved to new cities and schools, many times in their short lives. Other students move to our country to seek refuge from war torn, dangerous cities around the world. Other students have special needs, or have behavior patterns that do not allow them to learn at a rate comparable to their peers. Regardless of their personal reason, they learn that my classroom is a safe, comfortable, inviting place where we celebrate differences, and find out we are more similar than we might think.

My students have very diverse learning styles.

A small percentage of my students learn new concepts easily, without need for extra instruction. The majority of my students need to be re-taught concepts and learn multiple methods to solving problems in order to be successful.

My Project

Mathematicians in my classroom need supplies in order to do their best thinking and learning. First, they need writing supplies: Expo markers, pencils, and white boards to write on. These will help my students when working in small groups and in stations. Plastic pockets will allow me to make class sets of worksheets so that every student can draw on their papers without making 80 copies.

When my students say "math is fun", I am so proud.

Math tools help to make math fun. Graphing white boards and equation tiles will make math come alive for my students. They love having things in their hands and using their resources to solve problems.

When students have extra time, logic games will give them quick activities to grow their spatial reasoning and mindset! These fun games are also good for students who need a cool down or a break from the activity. They can be done individually or whole group, and make a great addition to my rainy day recess game closet!
