My students need scientific calculators in order to perform complex calculations. This will give the students more time to focus on higher level skills in their mathematics education.
My students are 7th graders who come from highly diverse and impoverished neighborhoods in Indianapolis, Indiana. In my classroom, my students are able to find a safe space to take on the challenge of learning mathematics. My students are held to high expectations, which they strive to meet each day. We encourage each other to do our best.
My students are curious about how mathematics can be used in the real world.
Therefore, my students are given the opportunity to experience mathematics as a hands on process where they have an opportunity to discuss, use manipulatives, work in cooperative groups, use technology to expand on concepts, and use writing to express their thinking.
My Project
The 35 TI-30XII scientific calculators will be used every day in my 6 math classes. Our school is recognized by the state of Indiana as a STEM certified school. In order to meet all the needs of the students in my classroom, they must have the opportunity to tackle more complex math problems, which will prepare them for high school and beyond. With the transition to more rigorous standards in mathematics in Indiana, students have been given larger, real-world problems that require technology at an earlier age.
Many students in my classroom are unable to afford their own calculators, but with your donation all my students will have access to technology that will enhance their mathematics education.
These calculators will help to level the playing field, which will create more success for my students.
