My Students
We are a predominantly African American middle school in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. Eighty percent of our students live in single parent families that are below the federal poverty limit.
Our school is categorized as a high needs school.
We are in need of a lot of resources to meet the needs of our students who are students with disabilities, English language learners, and homeless families.
Yet, our students have a passion for learning. They come to school daily, and give their best everyday. For most of our students, school is their safe place. It provides more than an education. Our school is where these students are fed, have a social life, and are exposed to culture such as arts, museums, and Broadway shows.
My Project
I am a math teacher and my students love math but I would love for their interest in reading to improve.
I believe if students can read well their math skills will also improve because they have to read and understand their math problems.
I would love to bridge the gap between math and reading by providing books about math concepts for my students to read.
They books have the potential to change the trajectory of my students' lives and impact their families and communities. My goal is to create a love of reading in the math classroom, one book at a time!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
