Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a 4th grade teacher. We have a variety of minority students attending. Our school is mainly composed of Latino and Caucasian students.
95% of the students are Latinos and they come from low income families.
This school uses the 90/10 model. This means that the lower grades learn 90% in Spanish and 10% in English. As the students get older they start to learn more English. By sixth grade all students should be completely bilingual. Students in their last year will be taught using 50% English and 50% Spanish. There is a big demand for enrollment and a huge waiting list. I want to mention that the parents of the students that attended last year were very satisfied with the school and the model they use. Most students are coming back and kindergarten is completely full and has a long waiting list.
My Project
This set of books will help my class to understand better the Math concepts. Relating Math with stories makes it easy for the students to understand complex math concepts. Learn about division while reading books out loud and discussing them all together is way fun. Some times students struggles in Math because they can't relate the Math to real life. With this books, students are engage and they make a connection to what they know and what they are learning. Bean 12 to learn division, How long is a foot? to learn about measurements, The Lion's share to learn about fraction, and the list goes on. I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
