Math Skills Meet Family Game Night!

My Students

Somewhere deep in the heart of the Midwest lies our city. It is the quintessential rural town that has always been described in books, television, and movies since the beginning of time. Families have lived here for generations and take pride in everything that the small town has to offer. The townspeople come out in force at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, as well as the Strawberry Festival. They crowd the stands to see their hometown team play ball and line the streets during the annual homecoming parade. It is, indeed, a tiny piece of Midwestern paradise.

Our high school special education classroom is a place of growth in academics, personality, and citizenship.

We celebrate each other's successes while learning from each other's mistakes; in short, we try our best and come together as one team with the common goal of becoming productive citizens in a global society.

My students don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of; instead, they embrace them and the challenges they pose without fear.

My Project

The use of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is the basis of all math literacy. Although many of these skills should be concrete by the time students get to high school, for those students with a disability, these skills can continue to be difficult, and therefore need to be practiced and honed to perfection. The problem with this is that because basic math operations are not a part of the Common Core State Standards in high school, they are not covered in math classes.

Through your donation to this project, my students will be able to check out a variety of math games that all relate to math literacy and take them home for the weekend to play with their families.

I am asking for a variety of games that will address the math literacy needs of my diverse group of students with special needs. Some games, such as Sequence Numbers, Math Wrap Ups, and Tri-Facta, are for my students with lower math abilities that still need practice basic math operations using mental math. Other games, such as fraction/decimal/percent circle graphs and Prime Club Math, are for my students with medium math abilities to practice their critical math skills. All of these games apply to real-world concepts in that they will help my students build on their math skills needed to do basic life tasks, like balancing a checkbook or making change. These games will also help my students with their transition portions of their IEPs in that it will teach them employment skills.
