My Students
Improvement is the beginning. Success is the End that will last forever." is my motto for this school year. Despite the challenge ahead of me this year, I am determined to make "Math Skills for Life" a success starting with one grant and one program at at time.
My school population is approximately 500 students in grades K-8.
There are many students in my school with emotional, physical, and mental disabilities. Unfortunately, students in special needs classes as well as regular education classes performed well below proficient on the New York State Mathematics Exam in June 2013. There are students on both extremes of the continuum of college readiness. There are students who have never seen or heard of the alphabet or numerals in Kindergarten and students who are attending Algebra Regents High School Class, which I teach.
My Project
Math Skills for Life will impact the entire fabric of the school. There are so many students in need of extra support. The students will work on performance tasks, print projects, and make copies of their portfolio work to take home. In addition, students will save all projects on the same flashdrive. On Wednesdays, students will stay after school practicing for the end of year exam. I will need copies of work for every grade: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
The center/room will be organized in stations with manipulatives on one side of the room and copy machine on the other side of the room. The students will be seated at tables and desks in the middle of the room. Each child have assess to the copier, manipulatives, calculators, etc...during the entire time they are in the room receiving help and/or tutoring another student with the supervision of teacher.
The resources will be used to supplement current resources and fill the void of lack of resources in our school.
The materials will make it possible for students to practice mathematics skills daily, complete extended activities, perform tasks online and on computers, save progress documents and projects, and develop critical thinking skills. I will be proud when ALL students have mastered skills about Life, Fractions, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division. etc...
