I teach fifth grade at a California public school where over 40% of the students receive free or reduced lunches.
I specialize in helping students improve in math. I have developed many great ways for the students to learn math, but usually I am the one demonstrating how I solve problems, and I would like to have my students quickly be able to share their work instead.
Because we live in a visual world, the students love to see math demonstrated. One way to increase student participation and sharing is to have my students show how they solved a math problem.
There are often many ways to solve a problem, so having different students share their work with the class is highly beneficial to increased comprehension.
I provide notebooks for my students to practice math lessons. During our math time each day, the students watch my demonstration of how to solve a math problem, then they work on similar math problems at their desk in their notebook. I would like to have a document projector in my classroom so that students can instantly share their math solutions with their classmates.
Students have become visual learners, and a document projector enables participation by all children. Students can bring their notebook, with a math problem solution written on it, to the projector, and the entire class will be able to see the work instantly.
Another use of the document projector is to share drawings and images with the entire class from any book or document. I can read a story aloud, and the entire class can see the words and the illustrations as I read.
The document projector will also benefit English Language Learners and students with learning disabilities because they will see an increased use of visuals in the classroom.
It will also help reduce the need for copying materials for the class, because I will be able to share without needing to create as many handouts.
Often in my classroom, students work in small groups. The groups can write together on a project, and instantly be able to share their work with the class.
Your generosity in helping fund this proposal will make a great difference in the way students learn in my classroom. There will be increased classroom participation because students will be eager to have their work shared with the class, and will learn from each other.
