Second grade students must be able to "see" numbers within other numbers, understand the combinations of five and ten, develop a strong sense of number, and be able to use a variety of strategies for addition and subtraction. Such a foundation is vital for successful reasoning in their world.
My second grade students attend a school that serves approximately 200 students from grades K-2.
They come to second grade eager to learn in an environment that instills the importance of reasoning in all content areas. Students are challenged to think beyond skills in isolation and are shown how what they are learning is applicable in their lives. Students, including several students with individualized education plans, come into second grade with various abilities that are fostered and built upon.
My Project
Powerful reasoning comes from seeing and doing! With the resources requested through this project, students will be able to develop powerful number reasoning. All of the math tools requested will help students visualize number relationships that they will apply far beyond the use of the tools. With the introduction, thoughtful and intentional use, and weaning of these tools, students will eventually "carry" with them ways to visualize numbers. Furthermore, with deep number sense understanding, students develop needed confidence with operations and problem solving. The process, not the product, becomes the center with the use of math tools such as those requested with this project.
Second graders must be equipped to reason mathematically.
Paramount to this ability is a deep understanding of number which can be developed through effective instruction and the use of various math tools. Each child can progress mathematically and make important connections and discoveries in their world.
