My students need math and science materials to help start the year. These include basic items like pencils, scissors and glue sticks as well as hands-on center materials.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Wisdom begins in wonder. " ~ Socrates
I want to inspire my students to wonder about the world, to ask questions, to seek answers to questions, and to use the appropriate tools and methods to solve them. I strive to make my classroom filled with interactive, inquiry-based, hands-on learning.
I teach two classes of 2nd grade Bilingual students in Math and Science.
My school is Title I, meaning the majority of our students are economically disadvantaged. Many of my students have a hard time being able to afford basic school supplies, however, they always come into my classroom with a hard-working attitude and are happy to be doing math or science. I love getting to watch them participate in hands-on activities and seeing their excitement, knowing that they do not get opportunities to participate in this kind of learning anywhere but here in my class.
My Project
The resources I am requesting are to help create more hands-on learning stations, as well as supplement their inquiry-based instruction with content related literature. I think the connection between reading, writing, science and math is essential to well-rounded instruction. The books I am requesting are to be used a supplement to the units we will cover in class in both math and science. They will be used during designated reading times and for research projects. Materials such as safety goggles, science sort, and the weather instruments kit are to be used to create hands-on learning centers and labs. Additionally, I am requesting basic school supplies like pencils, pens, scissors, glue sticks, red pens, etc. to help our classroom function on a day-to-day basis as we typically run very low on these supplies.
The donations made to projects in our classroom help tremendously- more than you could even imagine.
Creating a classroom filled with hands-on learning is not easy and it means the world to me to be able to provide this kind of learning environment to my students. Another great thing I have noticed is that my kids begin to learn about the word "donor" and they, in turn, talk about wanting to be donors someday too. I can't imagine a better way to teach about giving and service to others.
