Math Routines to Build Numerical Confidence

My Students

My resilient, hardworking fifth graders have risen to the challenges of distance learning and have quickly and skillfully adapted to these difficult circumstances. They continue to push themselves academically across all content areas to continue their growth and set themselves up for success as they transition to new middle schools next year.

Our fifth graders will begin their final year of elementary school participating in person learning, following a truly challenging year.

Each year, the first six weeks are dedicated to building community and relationships among students.

My Project

By the end of fifth grade mathematicians are expected to add, subtract, multiply fluently. Math routines are a great way to build confidence while encouraging students to use strategies flexibly.

Counting collections is a routine that allows students to practice counting by grouping a large number of objects using their own strategies.

Sometimes it takes counting twenty groups of ten for students to see that this is the same as 200. This is even more powerful when mathematicians have the opportunity to count up to thousand using their own grouping strategies. Suddenly we can identify adding and multiplication and division in our arrangements.

The materials requested in this project are to help create counting collections to be used with 5th grade mathematicians. This will be a great way to establish community and collaboration while developing stronger number sense as we launch our math workshop this fall.
